This free online course is designed to build the capacity of young children with communication difficulties and their communication partners to have conversations that will improve well-being and self-advocacy skills.
By Talking About The Important Stuff, you can ensure that from very early on, children with a communication disability are given opportunities to learn how to talk about themselves and to advocate for themselves as they grow older.
We need conversations with each other to make sense of the world, to be supported and to support others. We all have the right to communicate. This means being able to express our feelings, our concerns and even have the opportunity to complain. This right and opportunity should not be dependent on how a person communicates.
Children with complex communication needs (CCN) often miss out on opportunities for organic conversations. Through this crucial learning, key communication partners will gain an understanding of the importance of Talking About The Important Stuff and how to enable it.

When we experience something exciting, worrying, uplifting, or upsetting, one of the first things we do is to talk about it. This helps us to make sense of it, ask the questions we need, and share it with others. Sharing helps us to understand our own feelings, the perspectives of others and to process things that happen to us and in the wider world. Communication with others is integral to emotional development and our overall well-being.
In this course we look at common strategies suggested to support emotional development and well-being, and suggest adaptations for those who need additional communication support.
Mostly parents but also relevant information for teachers and service providers who are supporting parents of children/young people with complex communication needs.
