About this course

When we experience something exciting, worrying, uplifting, or upsetting, one of the first things we do is to talk about it. This helps us to make sense of it, ask the questions we need, and share it with others. Sharing helps us to understand our own feelings, the perspectives of others and to process things that happen to us and in the wider world. Communication with others is integral to emotional development and our overall well-being.

In this course we look at common strategies suggested to support emotional development  and well-being, and suggest adaptations for those who need additional communication support.

Who is this course for?

Mostly parents but also relevant information for teachers and service providers who are supporting parents of children/young people with complex communication needs.

Expected outcomes

Parents:

  • The importance of communication in emotional development and well-being
  • What you can do to have better conversations and connection with your child/person – even for those more complex topics.

Service providers/educators:

  • The importance of communication in emotional development and well-being
  • Considerations for supporting parents who have children with communication challenges.

Simple strategies to engage in supported conversations with your students or clients about more complex topics, even for beginning or emergent communicators.
