Talking About the Important Stuff online course

This free online course is designed to build the capacity of young children with communication difficulties and their communication partners to have conversations that will improve well-being and self-advocacy skills.

By Talking About The Important Stuff, you can ensure that from very early on, children with a communication disability are given opportunities to learn how to talk about themselves and to advocate for themselves as they grow older.

We need conversations with each other to make sense of the world, to be supported and to support others. We all have the right to communicate. This means being able to express our feelings, our concerns and even have the opportunity to complain. This right and opportunity should not be dependent on how a person communicates.

Children with complex communication needs (CCN) often miss out on opportunities for organic conversations. Through this crucial learning, key communication partners will gain an understanding of the importance of Talking About The Important Stuff and how to enable it.

Who is this course for?

Parents and professionals who:

  • Have someone in their life with little to no verbal speech
  • Want to help their person build foundations from early childhood to develop healthy emotional regulation, well-being and self advocacy skills
  • Are striving for connection via two-way conversations with their person

What can you expect from the course?

This online course targets the early development of skills in children, such as emotional development, well being and self advocacy. Parents or professionals will learn, practice and develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of the uniqueness and autonomy of their person. You’ll learn ways to enable everyone to participate in conversations that matter.

The course includes:

  • Video lessons
  • Real stories
  • Examples and activities
  • Opportunity for reflection and sharing

What does it cost?

This is a free course, funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. Go to dss.gov.au for more information.

How long does it take?

The course will take approximately 8 hours to complete, all done in your own time at your own pace. Come and go from the lessons as required. Please note that lessons need to be completed in order of appearance. Please ensure you click the red ‘complete’ box at the end of each lesson to enable the ability to move on to the next lesson.
