Welcome to Get AAC-ited. Week 6
This week we have a printable poster to inspire you to find small pockets of time throughout your week.
You can download and print the poster here.
We also have some challenges if you choose to accept them. (They also listed along the bottom of the poster to pull off and share).
You could:
- Share a chat with a student who uses AAC that is not in your class.
- Take at least 3 turns each with a student who communicates using a method other than speech
- Encourage a chat between 2 students. (At least one of them should be an AAC user)
- Find some times during your lesson to pause and give time for your students to initiate (especially those who take a bit of extra time).
- Start the lesson by saying “Does anyone have anything they want to say before we start?”
- Set aside some class time for free chat after a lesson. You can talk about the lesson, or just anything. Maybe all students could use AAC!
- If a student has some exciting news, don’t steal their turn, support them to tell their news to others.
- Take some time with a student who is learning to use AAC. Don’t start the conversation, just hang out. Watch to see if they show you they have something to say.
- When you pause, count to 5 before you jump in. Sometimes it takes a little longer.
Tell us how you think you can allocate some extra time this week to give someone a chance to have their say?
This resource influenced me to feel excited about what my students have to say.
